Our caravan park near the Lake District and holiday homes have the benefit of sitting in a fantastic location, surrounded by great natural beauty and exciting attractions. When you stay at our caravan park, you are spoilt for choice with things to see and do, so we thought we would give you a helping hand and suggest a few of the most popular activities in the local area – this time, we’ll take a look at Sizergh Castle.
Sizergh Castle is a Grade I listed building just a 20-minute drive from our caravan park. Unlike many of the stately homes around the UK, Sizergh is a family-inhabited country house as the Strickland family still live in the house today.
The family has been associated with Sizergh since 1239 when the heiress, Elizabeth Deincourt, married Willian de Stirkeland (Strickland). It wasn’t until 1950 that the house was gifted to the National Trust, allowing for it to be opened up to the public.
One family member you may be familiar with is Catherine Parr, the sixth and final wife of Henry VIII. It is thought that she lived at Sizergh Castle after her husband, the King, died.
The House
The house itself gives a snapshot into its own history as well as the stories of those who lived there throughout the years. The vast collection of paintings and portraits of family members as well as of notable historic figures displays just how well connected the family was.
Everything inside the house shows the luxury in which the family lived since the mid-13th century, and it provides a fascinating look into the history of the family, house and country.
The Gardens
The castle is surrounded by gardens that reflect the lavishness of the castle itself. You can take a walk around the well-cared for garden and view the National Trust’s largest limestone rock garden.
Of course, it can be difficult to keep children entertained when visiting a stately home, but Sizergh offers something to help keep them happy in the garden. The wild play trail is designed with kids in mind and allows them to explore and play. There are even kids’ quizzes available in the house, helping to keep them interested as they make their way around the stately home.
You can pay to see the gardens and house or just the garden if you prefer. The house is open from April-October and is closed every Monday, so it’s best to plan your visit before you go.
You can take a guided tour around the house at 11 am and 11:20 am (excluding Saturdays and Mondays) and it’s just £1 per person.
